Stories and Tails

Happy Tuesday Everyone! I hope that you all are having a wonderful day; I've been a lazy butt for the past couple of days, so I haven't been doing a lot of blog worthy stuffs! But, I did want to share a couple of pawesome photos that Domeek took of Ginger and I last night.

Freckles the Dog and Ginger

Freckles the Dog and Ginger

Yes, we are that cute! ;-)

I have to send out a gigantic belated birthday wish to a certain dog we all know...who turned the big 5-0 on Monday! I'm sure you all grew up reading his books...he is the totally awesome and super smart Clifford the Big Red Dog!!

Freckles the Dog and Clifford
Seen here with Norman Bridwell, Clifford's Daddy and Creator

Seeing Clifford all over the news got me thinking about all of my and Domeek's favorite literary pups...so, in no particular order, here are some of the greatest dogs in literature!

Freckles the Dog Buck Call of the Wild
The stolen Buck, from Jack London's The Call of the Wild!

Freckles the Dog Lassie
The heroic Lassie fom Eric Knight's short novel and eventually Lassie Come-Home

Freckles the Dog Nana
The ever loving Nana from J. M. Barrie's Peter Pan or the Boy Who Wouldn't Grow Up!

Freckles the Dog Tock
The friend and watch-dog Tock from Norton Juster's The Phantom Tollbooth

Freckles the Dog Kep
The heroic Kep from Beatrix Potter's The Tale of Jemima Puddle-Duck

Freckles the Dog Cerebus
The scary Cerberus from Dante's Divine Comedy

Freckles the Dog Pongo
And finally, the resourceful Pongo from Dodie Smith's 101 Dalmatians

What an amazing group of pups, huh?

There's a great illustrated book out called Dogs In Books by Catherine Britton, which reveals a lot of dogs that were written about from religious times, to Shakespeare, to classical novels, all the way through to modern times (and Snoopy/Scoopy Doo)! If you get the opportunity, you should check it out, especially since it's only $11.66 on Amazon!

So, what pup is your favorite to read about?!

Have a great day everyone!

  1. Dear Goose,

That is a REALLY BIG RED DOG THING! Bark bark bark bark bark bark bark bark bark bark bark bark!!!!!!!

    Ahem...

Wait, my person says she knows that big red thing. She says it was her favourite when she was little. That her grandmother used to read about Clifford to her. That's strange. Why would she like such a big scary red thing?

My littlest person likes Walter the Farting Dog. His books often make giggle-noises come out of her body.

I like reading about my dog friends best on their blogs. That is my favourite kind of pup to read about.

  2. Wow I like that Clifford fellow, my human remembers reading about him when she was a little girl (they even had a stuffie of him in a primary school library).

My favourite literary pooch would have to be Scotty from May Gibb's Scotty in Gumnut Land. :)

  6. Hi there!

We are working on a post about favorite dog books, but haven’t had time to sit down and write it yet. There are just so many books that we love, but the post will be coming soon.

The short version, to answer your question:

Lad, A Dog by Albert Payson Terhune
Gray Dawn by Albert Payson Terhune
A Dog’s Life: The Autobiography of a Stray by Ann M. Martin
    A Dog’s Purpose by W. Bruce Cameron

I want to read The Art of Racing In The Rain, by Garth Stein, I have heard good things about it. Another book I want to read is Rin Tin Tin: The Life and The Legend by Susan Orlean. It is about the dog, but also how dogs’ roles in our lives have changed over the years.

  7. Ok, Mom is going to look for the book. As far as our favorite dog book, don't have one, the bestest reading we do is about all of our Blogville Furends.
